The most important thing to know about the puppy Parvo virus infection is that it can be prevented with vaccination. So it’s important to get your puppies vaccinated. The signs of parvo virus infection in puppies could be anything from lethargy to reluctance to eating, to vomiting and diarrhea. So if your puppy shows any of these signs, they should be taken to your veterinarian immediately to be tested.
Parvo in puppies is treatable, whether or not they make it through the viral infection depends on a lot of different factors, like whether or not the mother dog was vaccinated, whether the puppy had vaccines, how virulent or strong the virus is and how long it has sick before we start treatment, so it is very important to get them in right away and if they do test positive for the Parvo virus, we can hospitalize them with IV fluids and antibiotics to support them until they can clear the viral infection on their own.

A 4 month old that we are looking to adopt had parvo – what strain I don’t know – and was treated at our county dog shelter and he is doing very well in foster care right now. He is a lab/retriever mix. My Question: Can the parvo virus come back and be a further problem to the dog or has it been fully eradicated. Any other complications down the road?
There should not be any more problems if he is doing well. As long as he is vaccinated against Parvo, he should not catch it again. Once a dog recovers from Parvo there are no long term side effects. If you have any other questions, just let me know and good luck with the new addition.
